A program on Chinese language education for Global South countries, part of the 2026 Shanghai Summer School, concluded on September 4 after four weeks of courses, teaching practice, and cultural activities.

Sponsored by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Education and organized by the School of Chinese Studies and Exchange of Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), the program brought together students from Brazil, Thailand, Peru, Argentina, Morocco, Cambodia, Iraq, and other Global South countries.

Grounded in the development of international Chinese language education as a discipline, the program responded to the call to strengthen solidarity and cooperation with Global South countries and to jointly build a community with a shared future for humanity. It focused on training local Chinese-language teachers and future educators from developing countries across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the South Pacific. Drawing on SISU’s experience in international Chinese language education, this training aimed to support Chinese language education that meets local needs.

The curriculum spanned teaching theory, classroom practice, and Chinese culture. Courses covered intercultural communication, language-learning psychology, second-language acquisition, lesson planning, and classroom observation, using teaching cases to give students a closer look at different teaching methods.

As part of the training, students applied what they had learned to design micro-lesson plans for specific language points, taking into account cultural differences, learners’ needs, and local teaching contexts.

The program also included Chinese-language classes, workshops in paper-cutting, tai chi, and Chinese calligraphy, as well as lectures on contemporary China.

Learning extended beyond the classroom. The group visited the Site of the First CPC National Congress, the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center, and Tencent. They also took part in the community immersion activity A Day as a Quyang Resident and practiced Chinese in real-life settings at Yuyuan Garden.

These experiences gave students a chance to use Chinese outside the classroom and see more of everyday life in Shanghai.

As they return home, the participants will take with them new ideas for the classroom and experiences in China that can enrich their teaching. What they learned in Shanghai will now find its way into classrooms back home, creating new connections across languages and cultures.
